Drive vs train

Hiring a car looks expensive on a daily rate, but a full tank of fuel, M-way tolls and ULEZ can still undercut a family of four on advance train tickets if you choose the right route. Pick your journey and we'll add up the real costs of both.

Reference fuel and toll prices last checked against RAC Fuel Watch, M6 Toll and TfL published 2025 rates. Re-confirm for the day before driving.

What this solves

Hire cars in the UK cost £30–£80 per day before insurance, which is enough to put off many travellers. But on routes without a direct train (the Lakes, Scottish Highlands, parts of Wales) or for parties of three or more, a single car often beats the train on total spend once you stack the M-way charges and ULEZ on the rail side. This tool compares the two honestly.

FAQ

Is driving cheaper than the train over a long distance?

It depends on passengers. With two adults the train often wins on cost; with three or four adults the hire car typically wins once you factor in advance fares for everyone. Add £30–£80/day hire, fuel and tolls on one side, and stack four advance train singles on the other.

When does ULEZ actually charge me?

ULEZ charges £12.50 per day for any non-compliant vehicle that enters Greater London. The standard charge runs every day including weekends, midnight to midnight. Most post-2015 diesels and post-2006 petrol cars are compliant — check your vehicle against TfL's checker before driving in.

Should I book the train or hire a car?

Hire the car if you're heading somewhere with poor rail coverage (Highlands, mid-Wales, the Lakes) or planning to stop at multiple rural destinations. Book the train if your route is well-served and you're travelling solo or as a couple — you'll save the parking fees and arrive relaxed.

How complex is ULEZ really?

Less so than it sounds. For a compliant hire car (the default at every major UK rental firm), you don't pay ULEZ at all — the operator's fleet is generally Euro 6 / Euro 4 petrol compliant. You only need to worry if you're driving your own older vehicle through London.
